What is a Double Check?

A double check occurs when a single move delivers check simultaneously from two different pieces. It is one of the most powerful tactical motifs in chess, as the only way to respond is to move the king; blocking or capturing one of the checking pieces does not stop the other.

Key Features

  • Involves two pieces simultaneously giving check to the opposing king.
  • The only legal response is to move the king; blocking or capturing one attacking piece is not enough.
  • Usually arises from a discovered check, where moving one piece uncovers another piece that also gives check.
  • Very effective for winning material or delivering checkmate, as the opponent has very limited options.

Double Check Example

Scenario: Black moves and delivers a double check.
Double check position
The white king is on g1, the black queen on b6 targets the king through the diagonal, and the black knight on f2 moves to uncover the queen's check while also giving check itself, creating a double check.
Move: 1. Nh3+!

By moving the knight, both the knight and the queen deliver check simultaneously. White must move the king; capturing or blocking one piece does not stop the other.
